Downtown Market – Kansas City is located in the Professional Building Lofts Building on Grand Boulevard. Originally, the space was a retail space and restaurant. Both spaces received considerable demolition to open up space as well as providing a connection between the two. Pre-existing building structure and mechanical systems had to be coordinated. The design maximized the amount of product display and store operations given these systems.
Upon entering, two sales areas flank the entrance with one primarily handling alcohol sales. On the lower level, refrigeration units are on the south and beverage station to the east. In the center, there is ample product shelving. Given the elevation change between the 2 pre-existing spaces, stairs were constructed. To aid in accessibility, a lift was installed for those using wheelchairs. The upper level has more product shelving. To the south is a walk-in cooler customers can access. To the east, frozen goods are available for purchase. Supporting areas are tucked away on the upper level and in the basement. Overall, Downtown Market – Kansas City has an industrial feel with its open ceilings and concrete floors. The end result is convenience with its wide selection, operating hours, and easy access for the urbanite on the go.
