Bringing community together with the KC Pet Project – Campus Sign.
The sign is a focal point to KC Pet Project’s main campus located Swope Park in Kansas City, Missouri. Not only did 3F30 provide consultation, but also construction documentation. Initially, KC Pet Project had this sign in mind when their main campus was constructed years prior to this project moving forward. 3F30 worked with Norton & Schmidt Engineering and Compass Constructors to ensure the success of the project.
The emphasis of this project is a gathering point that showcases the artistry of Toller. Toller’s sculptural piece depicts selective adoptee stories in metal. The main wall structure consists of unit masonry cladded in oxidized, metal panels on the sculpture side. As a result, the wall structure supports the sculpture’s anchor system and provides a contrasting background to the sculpture.
Although concepts of the location existed, it required refinement for its construction. Being an exterior project, site design was key. First, site placement needed to coordinate with the existing conditions. For example, grading and stormwater control ensures that water will not pool at the sign location. Secondly, concrete hardscape was added for gathering and viewing. Electrical utilities were routed from the main building to the concrete pad for lighting at night. Then, landscaping was added to soften the space and accent the campus sign. Landscape beds are accentuated by die cut, metallic railing.
The KC Pet Project – Campus Sign project may be small in scale, but it is a great example of collaboration efforts. 3F30 was happy to work on a wonderful addition for an organization that provides a grand service and purpose in our community.
